Sparv Embedded team

About us

Sparv Embedded AB is situated in Linköping, Sweden. It was founded in 2012 by Anders Petersson. We now employ a couple of persons full-time and a number of others part-time. We develop innovative technical solutions by means of electronics, microcontrollers and computer software, predominately meteorological measurement equipment. Our areas of expertise involve systems design, sensors, long-range telemetry radio links, GPS, low-power embedded systems, control of radio-controlled vehicles and desktop and mobile software development. Sparv employs associates and consultants from the local technology cluster and globally for special tasks.

Flagship product

The flagship product of Sparv Embedded is the weather sounding system Windsond, a uniquely small and economical solution for weather readings at different altitudes. For example, firefighters use Windsond when combating wildfires, and scientists use Windsond to understand tornado behavior.

Mission

Getting measurements of our atmosphere is today more complicated and expensive than it needs to be. Meteorological towers, radar, satellite data, traditional radiosondes etc leave data gaps in space, time and accuracy. Sparv Embedded works to fill these data gaps by engineering novel, miniature electronics and matching software.

Past and present

The seed of the company was planted in 2010, when Anders Petersson started developing custom control of RC airplanes in his spare time. As a developer of embedded software since university graduation in 2003, Anders had gained an understanding of technology and projects that found good use in the application of microcontrollers to RC airplanes.

In 2012 Anders started devoting his full time to the development of Windsond under the name “Kiwi Embedded”, in cooperation with the Swedish Airsport Federation. In August that year Windsond debuted in the Hot Air Balloon World Championship in the USA with good results. In June 2014 Sparv Embedded became the official name as the company was incorporated to meet the growing interest in Windsond and other embedded solutions from academia. In 2017 we also started adapting sensors for UAVs as the Sparvio system. In the years since, we have continued to grow organically with ever more partners in business and academia.

Future

Sparv continues to refine and adapt Windsond to new use cases and customers. We are also working on Sparvio to make it easier to use and to support more sensors. We develop fast temperature and humidity sensors and we also put higher emphasis on data quality, with in-house calibration of temperature, humidity and pressure.

We hope to have a positive impact on our collective understanding of our environment and by extension on the choice of sensible environmental policies.
